Return on Investment (ROI) – pays for itself in around 18 months
Maintenance free – LED’s average lifespan of 10-20 years
Energy efficient – uses 80-90% less energy than traditional lighting
Ecologically friendly – LED lights contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable
Instant lighting and frequent switching – LED’s brighten up immediately when powered on and can be switched off and on frequently without effecting the bulb or light emission
No noise – no noise/buzzing or flickering like fluorescent tubes
What Are LED’s?
LEDs, or light–emitting diodes, are a more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting type of light.
How Does LED Lighting work?
With LEDs, an electrical current passes through semiconductor material, which illuminates the tiny light sources known as LEDs. The heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink, making it a more efficient type of lighting.
How Energy Efficient is LED Lighting?
LED lighting uses 10 times less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent lighting. For example, a halogen downlight, which uses 50W and requires a transformer that consumes 10W (total: 60W) can be replaced with an LED downlight which emits the same amount of light, yet only uses a total of 6W. A quality LED downlight will last 10,000 hours, whereas an incandescent will typically only last 1000 hours.
Why Switch to LED Lighting?
• minimum 50% energy-saving, compared to compact fluorescent (CFL) lighting • LEDs emit very little heat (reduces your load on air-conditioning) • LEDs have a lifetime of 20,000 to 40,000 hours (5–10 times longer than CFLs and incandescent lighting respectively). This means your maintenance person spending less time climbing up a ladder to replace failed bulbs/tubes, not to mention less waste going to landfill. • comparable light output to CFL’s and incandescent lighting • similar colour temperature as halogen or incandescent lighting (for example, warm white and cool white) • LEDs are more expensive to buy but way cheaper overall when considering lifetime energy use costs
What Type of LED Lighting Is Available For My Business?
TheEnergyExperts.com.au can arrange for the following types of LEDs to be installed in your business:
• recessed LED downlights
• LED tubes (to replace T8 or T12 fluorescent tubes
• LED globes (to replace 40W, 60W and even 75W incandescent bulbs or 10W, 12W, 15W or 20W compact fluorescent globes, also known as CFL’s).
Be aware that poor quality LEDs may not be as energy efficient as the packaging claims. Lower quality LEDs may provide insufficient light, may flicker when dimmed, change colour throughout their life or fail prematurely. Like with anything you buy, it’s worth paying a little more for quality.
Do LED Lights Get Hot?
One of the reasons LEDs last so long is that they don’t radiate heat the way that incandescent light bulbs or halogen downlights do. A heat sink that’s built into the LED absorbs the heat that’s produced and prevents the bulb or tube from overheating or burning out. This makes them safer than for example, halogen downlights, which are a fire risk.
How Long Can I Expect An LED Light To Last?
If you buy a good quality LED, you can expect between a 10 – 20 years lifespan. What you’ll find with LEDs is that they don’t ‘burn out’ or fail but rather, the amount of light produced decreases over time. The ‘lifetime’ of an LED is defined by when the light output decreases by 30%.
Are LEDs as Bright as Halogen Downlights or Incandescents?
Quality LEDs offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.
Is LED Lighting Dimmable?
Most LEDs don’t like being dimmed. That said, there are some types that are designed to be dimmed, so let us know how many of your existing halogen downlights or incandescent bulbs are on dimmer switches.
Do I Need to Replace the Whole Fitting or Just the Bulb?
If your existing halogen downlights are dimmable, it’s best to change the whole fitting, including the gimble and the bulb. The same applies if your existing transformers (in your ceiling cavity) are at least 10 years old. Otherwise, you can generally get away with changing just the bulb.
