Solar for Home
Historically, Solar Feed-In Tariffs (the rate you’re paid by your energy provider for sending your power back to the grid in the middle of the day) have been generous. But for the last 5-10 years, they’ve continued to shrink. As of 2026, they’ve never been lower (typically 1c – 5c/kWh), so your surplus solar power is worth next to nothing at the time it’s being produced (during daylight hours). Unless you’re home a lot during the day and able to use most of your power between 10am – 3pm, you’re far better off combing solar with battery storage. You can then draw down on this stored energy when the sun’s not shining – and/or send it to the grid when it’s actually needed (typically late-afternoon/early-evening), c/o a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Solar + battery storage = energy independence!
