Home Solar Batteries
Home solar batteries are becoming increasingly popular as a result of 4 things:
- escalating electricity prices (Australia has among the highest electricity prices in the world)
- reduced Solar Feed-In Tariffs (credits that are applied to your account each quarter for the surplus solar energy that you’ve sold back to the grid; you’re now lucky to get paid 6/ckWh).
- introduction of the new Federal government battery rebate, which contributes 30% towards the cost of a battery storage system
- introduction of a new ‘Sun Tax’, which penalises homeowners for exporting surplus solar energy back to the grid in the middle of the day
Is solar battery storage right for you?
If you want to install a home battery, it’s generally recommended to have a minimum 5kW solar power system (most clients are opting for a minimum of 10kW of solar).
Batteries are particularly beneficial if you:
- aren’t home much during the day and/or you’re not able to program appliances so that you use the bulk of your electricity during the day.
- are finding that your Solar Feed-In Tariff is much less than what it was initially and the credits you’re receiving aren’t covering as much of your bill anymore.
- you want to reduce your dependence on the grid and be protected against blackouts.
- you want your home to run on renewable energy as much as possible.
- you want to slash your electricity bill beyond what a solar power system alone can achieve.
- you want to take advantage of the Federal government battery rebate while it’s available.

- You can backup your home with a SolarEdge Back-Up Interface. You can even plug in a generator to selected SolarEdge inverters, enabling you to fill your battery from your generator, even when the sun’s not shining.
- Connect to any Virtual Power Plant (VPP), enabling you to get a better return on your battery storage investment.
- Get a full 10 year warranty, without being penalised by the number of times you cycle your battery each day.

Tesla Powerwall 3
- High system efficiency (89%).
- Continuous discharge rate of 5kW; with peak discharge rate of 11kW.
- 13.5kWh of storage, including backup capability.
- Join a range of Virtual Power Plant (VPPs) to gain a faster ROI.
Product Warranty:
10 years
Product Characteristics
- Tesla has proven itself to be one of the most reliable battery brands on the market.
- The PW3 has a built-in solar & battery inverter, which can integrate with any solar inverter.
- It offers a decent size storage capacity, with the ability to have up to 3 x Powerwall 3 expansion units (supplementary 13.5kWh batteries).
- When you install both Tesla batteries and a Tesla Wall Connector (smart EV charger), a seamless Tesla energy ecosystem is created, which is all controllable via the Tesla app. This combination provides backup power, optimizes time-of-use electricity rates by charging the battery at low-cost times and using stored energy when prices are high, and enables smart, efficient charging of an electric vehicle using the battery’s stored energy.
- The Tesla app makes it very easy to see the flow of energy from your panels to your inverter, your battery, your home and the grid.
- A Tesla Powerwall battery can be paired with any inverter.

SigEnergy SigenStor

What size solar battery do I need?
For households that can run heavy-duty appliances during the day, 10-14kWh of battery storage is usually ample for evening/overnight use, depending on how the home is heated and cooled. If you aren’t able to use much of your power during daylight hours, you might opt for a larger solar battery (16-24kWh battery).
Most hybrid solar battery storage units are capable of storing between 5kWh-48kWh.
With the generous 30% Federal Government battery rebate only claimable the once, if you install one battery now and then wait another year or more before installing another, you’ll only get the rebate on the first battery. If in the back of your mind, you’re entertaining the thought of adding another battery later, it may well be better to do it now. If budget is an issue, you might want to consider a Green Loan, where the bulk of the repayments can be covered by the savings from your batteries.

Benefits of home solar batteries
Reduce electricity bills – draw down on the solar energy stored in your home battery, rather than relying on the grid.
Get paid for excess power to the grid – you can get paid very handsomely for allowing your batteries to be partially discharged when the grid is under stress (usually in the late afternoon/early evening).
Blackout protection – never worry about a blackout again with battery back-up.
Slash your home’s footprint – installing a home battery allows you to become your own renewable mini power station. This drastically reduces your reliance on the grid.
Benefits of DC-coupled battery
Fewer energy conversions occur when a DC-coupled battery is installed with a DC-coupled inverter. This is a good thing, as it means you can use more of the energy that’s generated by your panels and stored in your batteries.
