New rebate slashes battery prices

May 20, 2025 | Battery Storage, Solar Power

The Federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program’ is now live. This new rebate means a substantial upfront discount — about $350 per useable kilowatt-hour (kWh). With most batteries costing around $1,000 per kWh, this equates to a discount of around 30% and thousands of dollars of savings!

For example, on a 10kWh home battery, you can save more than $3100.

Here are some important things to know:

  • the rebate applies to systems between 5kWh and 50kWh
  • you can only claim the rebate once
  • you can claim the battery rebate on a new battery storage system, even if you have an existing battery
  • homes, small businesses and community facilities are all eligible

In addition to the Federal government battery rebate, the NSW government is also offering a Virtual Power Plant or VPP rebate, which is worth up to $1500 – if you choose to join a VPP.

NOTE: since the Federal government’s rebate announcement, the uptake of batteries has skyrocketed. It’s likely the subsidy won’t be available forever (estimates by some experts in the solar industry suggest the $2.3 billion in rebates offered by the Federal government will be exhausted by July 2026, based on current battery uptake).
